SUMMARY:Meet the Authors - Dreams and Adventures: The Edwin Hubble Story
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday for a free event featuring a temporary exhibit about the life of American Astronomer\, Edwin Hubble! Learn about Edwin’s life and what inspired him to pursue the stars\, instead of law like his father insisted. The exhibit will be set up in the Planetarium lobby and a presentation will take place at 2 p.m. in the theater\, please note that this event will replace the 2 p.m. planetarium show. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS: William and Doris Martin live in Kansas City\, Missouri and have been married since 1980. They are both retired and are first-time authors. Their book\, Dreams and Adventures: The Edwin Hubble Story was inspired by William’s aunt\, Mildred Wells Venditto\, who gave two large boxes to William each filled with postcards\, pictures\, diaries\, and more saved by her grandfather and her parents in Marshfield\, Missouri\, from the late 1800s to early 1900s. \nAs William sorted through things\, he discovered a group picture from the Marshfield Public School that not only showed his grandfather\, but also showed Edwin Hubble among all of the students. Edwin Hubble had been born in Marshfield\, Missouri\, and attended the Marshfield Public School for almost four years. William decided to do more research on Edwin Hubble\, and the more he researched\, the more he found. He discovered a connection between his own mother’s family and Edwin Hubble’s mother’s family\, and that is what Dreams and Adventures: The Edwin Hubble Story is about. \nABOUT THE BOOK: This is the never-before-told story of Edwin Hubble\, the man that the Hubble Telescope was named after. It tells how Edwin became a self-taught astronomer before the age of 10\, thanks to a little book written by an English astronomer and a 2-inch telescope built by Edwin’s grandfather. It tells about his love affair with looking at the stars and his struggle to study astronomy\, despite a father who insisted that he become a lawyer. It describes his amazing discoveries about our universe and how he became a world-famous astronomer. Suitable for ages 8 and above.

SUMMARY:Jets & Corvettes
DESCRIPTION:Two things people love to see are shiny\, pretty cars and go-fast airplanes! \nThe Tulsa Air and Space Museum & Planetarium and the Tulsa Vette Set will be combining these two favorites into one great show on Saturday\, August 4\, 2018\, in an event called Jets and Corvettes. The cars will all have number tags on the dash for voting. \nThe Museum opens at 10:00 a.m.\, as usual\, and voting begins immediately. The voting will close at 1:00 p.m. Come see these beautiful cars and slick airplanes and enjoy a Planetarium show (and the rest of the best that TASM has to offer). \nRegular museum admission gets you in for the show and voting. They are going to get the vintage aircraft indoors and prepare for winter maintenance. TASM will be open as normal. \nWe do hope to welcome the Flagship Detroit back to TASM\, some time in Spring 2019!   \nA piece of flying history – the Flagship Detroit – will stop at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum & Planetarium on November 10-12.  The Flagship Detroit is a Douglas DC-3 aircraft built in 1937.  It’s one of the original flagship airplanes used by American Airlines in the 30’s and 40’s. SUMMARY:Super Blood Wolf Moon - Watch Party CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:EVENT CANCELLED: The TASM Planetarium was hoping to host a watch party of the Lunar eclipse taking place overnight\, unfortunately we have to cancelled the planned event.  We still hope you make plans to watch the eclipse from your own homes\, this is a very unique event!  Here’s more from our Planetarium Manager Bryan: \nOn the night of January 20\, everyone in North and South America will be greeted to a rare sight: a total lunar eclipse.  Amazingly\, this event coincides with another lunar event\, which we call a “supermoon”\, which occurs when the Moon reaches perigee\, or the closest point in its orbit to the Earth. \nA Lunar eclipse comes in three stages: penumbral\, partial\, and total.  The Earth’s shadow is split into two parts: the penumbra\, or fainter outer shadow\, and the umbra\, or dark inner shadow.  A penumbral eclipse occurs while the Moon is passing through the fainter penumbra.  A partial eclipse is where the Moon begins to pass into the umbra\, and a total eclipse occurs when the Moon is fully immersed in the umbra.  We will see all three on the night of January 20\, 2019\, stretching into the early hours of January 21. \nHere in Tulsa\, the penumbral stage of the eclipse will begin at 8:36 p.m.  The partial eclipse\, where the darkest part of Earth’s shadow will begin to creep across the lunar surface\, begins at around 9:33 p.m. and totality will begin at 10:41 PM and peak at 11:12 p.m.  Totality ends at 11:43 p.m. and the partial phase ends at 12:50 a.m.  The penumbral phase finally concludes at 1:48 a.m.\, marking the end of the event. \nFUN FACT: the Moon has a proper name: Luna.
