SUMMARY:Flagship Detroit Foundation to Visit
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: We have just been informed by the crew that the Flagship Detroit will not be at TASM on Monday\, November 12. They are going to get the vintage aircraft indoors and prepare for winter maintenance. TASM will be open as normal. \nWe do hope to welcome the Flagship Detroit back to TASM\, some time in Spring 2019!   \nA piece of flying history – the Flagship Detroit – will stop at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum & Planetarium on November 10-12.  The Flagship Detroit is a Douglas DC-3 aircraft built in 1937.  It’s one of the original flagship airplanes used by American Airlines in the 30’s and 40’s. The Flagship Detroit is a historical aircraft and is esteemed as the “World’s Oldest Flying DC-3.” \n \nIt flew in service for American Airlines from 1937-1944. Former Chief Pilot of American Airlines\, Zane Lemon\, and a group of other pilots had been on the hunt for a DC-3 for years. When they found the Flagship Detroit\, it was in service as a mosquito sprayer.  The Flagship Detroit is beautiful aircraft that has been meticulously restored to its original glory. \nThe Flagship Detroit will be at TASM providing open house tours and Flagship Detroit Foundation (FDF) membership rides.  A minimum of 20 FDF membership rides must be sold in order for the aircraft to fly\, FDF membership rides can be purchased below or in person at TASM.  FDF membership ride tickets also includes admission to the museum’s exhibit hall.  If you purchase a FDF membership ride\, you must sign a passenger waiver to board the aircraft: Adult Waiver or Minor (under 18) Waiver. \nTASM Hours during visit:\nSaturday Nov. 10 – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.\nSunday\, Nov. 11 – 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.\nMonday\, Nov. 12 – 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

SUMMARY:Meet the Authors - Dreams and Adventures: The Edwin Hubble Story
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday for a free event featuring a temporary exhibit about the life of American Astronomer\, Edwin Hubble! Learn about Edwin’s life and what inspired him to pursue the stars\, instead of law like his father insisted. The exhibit will be set up in the Planetarium lobby and a presentation will take place at 2 p.m. in the theater\, please note that this event will replace the 2 p.m. planetarium show. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS: William and Doris Martin live in Kansas City\, Missouri and have been married since 1980. They are both retired and are first-time authors. Their book\, Dreams and Adventures: The Edwin Hubble Story was inspired by William’s aunt\, Mildred Wells Venditto\, who gave two large boxes to William each filled with postcards\, pictures\, diaries\, and more saved by her grandfather and her parents in Marshfield\, Missouri\, from the late 1800s to early 1900s. \nAs William sorted through things\, he discovered a group picture from the Marshfield Public School that not only showed his grandfather\, but also showed Edwin Hubble among all of the students. Edwin Hubble had been born in Marshfield\, Missouri\, and attended the Marshfield Public School for almost four years. William decided to do more research on Edwin Hubble\, and the more he researched\, the more he found. He discovered a connection between his own mother’s family and Edwin Hubble’s mother’s family\, and that is what Dreams and Adventures: The Edwin Hubble Story is about. \nABOUT THE BOOK: This is the never-before-told story of Edwin Hubble\, the man that the Hubble Telescope was named after. It tells how Edwin became a self-taught astronomer before the age of 10\, thanks to a little book written by an English astronomer and a 2-inch telescope built by Edwin’s grandfather. It tells about his love affair with looking at the stars and his struggle to study astronomy\, despite a father who insisted that he become a lawyer. It describes his amazing discoveries about our universe and how he became a world-famous astronomer. Suitable for ages 8 and above.

SUMMARY:LIVE International Space Station NASA Downlink
DESCRIPTION:On May 14\, 2018\, Oklahoma students get a rare opportunity to talk and interact LIVE with NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station. \nAs part of our ongoing STEM education mission\, the Tulsa Air and Space Museum & Planetarium will be hosting a Live NASA Downlink inside the Planetarium. Earlier this year\, TASM sponsored an essay contest for area students to get a chance to pose questions to astronauts during the downlink. \nInternational Space Station In-flight Education Downlinks support NASA’s efforts to encourage K-12 students to study and pursue careers in science\, technology\, engineering\, and math (STEM). Downlinks are facilitated by the Johnson Space Center Office of Education as part of STEM on Station\, using the unique experience of human spaceflight to promote and enhance STEM education. \nOur students will watch as crew members discuss and demonstrate concepts in ways unique to space and impossible on Earth. Downlinks are also broadcast Live on NASA TV and streamed on the web.

SUMMARY:Aviator Ball 2018
DESCRIPTION:The Aviator Ball is the museum’s largest fundraiser of the year and businesses of all types and sizes come together to show their support. All proceeds from this event will benefit the operational needs of TASM. \nThis year’s event theme is “I need my SPACE: Mission Mars.” We have spent the past year raising funds for our capital campaign and are excited to launch the construction of our expansion that will house a Mars exhibit. \nDoors will open for the 2018 Aviator Ball at 5 PM and shortly after an out-of-this-world flight demonstration will be conducted by local pilots in conjunction with David Schultz Air Shows\, a national leader in air show performances. The flights will be orchestrated just above the runway\, steps from the museum. Attendees will then enjoy a plated dinner prepared by one of Tulsa’s finest chefs while discovering fun facts about Mars. The evening will wrap up with a live auction that includes once-in-a-lifetime flight experiences and irresistible travel opportunities. Event dress is business casual. \nIf you or your company is interested in attending by sponsoring a table\, download a sponsorship packet here.
