SUMMARY:Meet the Authors - Dreams and Adventures: The Edwin Hubble Story
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday for a free event featuring a temporary exhibit about the life of American Astronomer\, Edwin Hubble! Learn about Edwin’s life and what inspired him to pursue the stars\, instead of law like his father insisted. The exhibit will be set up in the Planetarium lobby and a presentation will take place at 2 p.m. in the theater\, please note that this event will replace the 2 p.m. planetarium show. \nABOUT THE AUTHORS: William and Doris Martin live in Kansas City\, Missouri and have been married since 1980. They are both retired and are first-time authors. Their book\, Dreams and Adventures: The Edwin Hubble Story was inspired by William’s aunt\, Mildred Wells Venditto\, who gave two large boxes to William each filled with postcards\, pictures\, diaries\, and more saved by her grandfather and her parents in Marshfield\, Missouri\, from the late 1800s to early 1900s. \nAs William sorted through things\, he discovered a group picture from the Marshfield Public School that not only showed his grandfather\, but also showed Edwin Hubble among all of the students. Edwin Hubble had been born in Marshfield\, Missouri\, and attended the Marshfield Public School for almost four years. William decided to do more research on Edwin Hubble\, and the more he researched\, the more he found. He discovered a connection between his own mother’s family and Edwin Hubble’s mother’s family\, and that is what Dreams and Adventures: The Edwin Hubble Story is about. \nABOUT THE BOOK: This is the never-before-told story of Edwin Hubble\, the man that the Hubble Telescope was named after. It tells how Edwin became a self-taught astronomer before the age of 10\, thanks to a little book written by an English astronomer and a 2-inch telescope built by Edwin’s grandfather. It tells about his love affair with looking at the stars and his struggle to study astronomy\, despite a father who insisted that he become a lawyer. It describes his amazing discoveries about our universe and how he became a world-famous astronomer. Suitable for ages 8 and above.
